Springfield police set to start camera program with public – Jan 20, 2019

Springfield will soon join several Illinois cities that have a voluntary program in which residents can register their private cameras to help out police. Police Chief Kenny Winslow told the City Council this past week that the registration will be available through the Springfield Police Department’s website in February.

Residents who own private exterior cameras would enter information, like their address and a way to contact them, into a portal on the website. That information would be uploaded into a spreadsheet, which would plot all of the registered private security cameras on a map. Police officers would have access to this information and would be able to contact camera owners afterward if a crime occurred nearby.

Springfield experiencing spike in car thefts, burglaries – Aug. 27, 2017

Springfield police are warning residents to lock their car doors after a 150 percent increase in motor vehicle thefts through July, fueled primarily by teenagers, who often abandon cars days or weeks later after joyriding.

Meanwhile, authorities also are cracking down with rule changes that will make it more likely teens caught breaking into or stealing cars will spend some time behind bars.

Crime Stoppers highlights neighborhood burglary sprees – Jun 30, 2017

Neighborhoods near Pasfield Golf Course and the Town and Country Shopping Center have been repeatedly targeted by burglars recently.

Crime Stoppers of Sangamon and Menard Counties issued an advisory this week that said police have taken several burglary reports in areas that include neighborhoods north and west of Pasfield all the way to West Jefferson Street, as well as near the shopping center. Pasfield is at Lawrence Avenue and Chatham Road; Town and Country is on South MacArthur Boulevard.
